Brentwood, TN - Megan Fleming will be a senior at the University of Evansville, majoring in Psychology with a Biology minor.  Megan got started with Relay For Life because of her grandfather’s fight with many different types of cancer.  Throughout Megan's experience, many people close to her had to fight cancer, including her best friend’s father, who lost his fight with cancer a little over a year ago.

Megan participated in a couple of Relays in high school, but really became involved with Relay in college.  She started out in Colleges Against Cancer during her freshman year. By the beginning of her sophomore year, she was the Relay For Life and Team Development Chairs.  During her sophomore year, her Relay Committee attended a conference with the University of Southern Indiana CAC, and decided to do a joint Relay they are only 15 minutes apart).  After doing this joint Relay, UE increased the amount raised by over $15,000!  The two colleges have been doing a joint Relay ever since!  Megan served as Relay For Life and Team Development Chairs and co-President of CAC during her junior year.  This year (Megan's senior year), she will be President of CAC and Relay For Life Chair.

We had the opportunity to catch up with Megan before she started another fast-paced year of college & Relay:

Q: What is your favorite part of Relay?
A: My favorite part of Relay is seeing people enjoying all the hard work that we’ve put into the event.  I love seeing people learning about all the wonderful things the American Cancer Society does and knowing that they’re raising money for an amazing cause.

Q: Describe a perfect Relay in 30 words or less.
A: Everyone having an amazing time and continuing to raise money for ACS while learning where that money was going and being able to honor loved ones who have fought cancer.

Q: If you had to pick just one moment that has meant to most to you in regard to Relay, what would it be?
A: I think being at the first luminaria ceremony of the first Relay that I was the chair of is a moment I will always remember.  The luminaria ceremony means so much to everyone at Relay.  It is so wonderful to see all of our hard work come together into a wonderful luminaria ceremony that allows people to connect to a love one or friend they know who has fought cancer.  The luminaria ceremony really makes Relay personal and makes everyone feel like the money their raising is going for an amazing cause, to find a cure for cancer.

Q: What do you think is the perfect song for the Survivors’ Lap? The luminaria Ceremony of Hope?
A: I think “Celebration” for the Survivor’s Lap and  “I Will Remember You” by Sarah Mclachlan for the luminaria ceremony.

Q: If you could travel to another Relay anywhere in the country, where would you go and why?
A: I would love to see a Relay in San Diego, California.  I can just imagine having something on or close to the beach and being able to use that  as part of the Relay.  I love the atmosphere and the weather in San Diego, and I would love to attend a Relay there.

Q: What is your favorite web site (other than RelayForLife.org)?
A: I don’t have a specific favorite site, but I love photography, so I love looking at photography website like webshots.com.  It’s really interesting to see how different people take pictures and just to look at pictures from all over the world.
