In the November "Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back." page, you might have noticed a volunteer feature story about a lady named Wendy Pizana. In her story, she mentions her son, Jesse, as the reason she participates in Relay For Life. We were able to catch up with Jesse, himself, to get his perspective of Relay For Life and what it means to him. Here are Jesse's answers to our questions:
1. First, please briefly describe your involvement/history with Relay For Life. I am 16 years old and attend Tecumseh High School. I have one sister, Danielle that I care about very much and a mother and father who have always been by my side. I am a Cancer Survivor for 2 ½ years from Hodgkins Lymphoma. I was first diagnosed April, 2005 at the age of 13. I have been involved in relay for 8 yrs. I was on my grandma’s team (Carol’s Hallmark) for the Adrian Relay. I have been the co-chair with my mom, Wendy for the past 2 years in Tecumseh. My father and sister were also on our committee in Tecumseh. This is a new relay in our own hometown and will be co-chairs for the 3rd year starting soon. The students and teachers in my school were real supportive of me and my family. I missed my Freshman year when the cancer came back and had tutoring to help me pass. I had to have a stem cell transplant, chemo, and radiation. My family and friends are very important to me and have been by my side. I have a very strong faith and believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. My mission is to help others around me and continue to Relay until we find a cure.
2. What is your favorite part of Relay? I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Most of all making a difference to help find a cure
3. Describe a perfect Relay in 30 words or less. A perfect relay would be lots of people, fun, and luminaria to light. The #1 thing would be to raise lots of money to find a cure to put an end to the suffering.
4. If you had to pick just one moment that has meant to most to you in regard to Relay, what would it be? The luminaria ceremony is my favorite to remember and honor those that lost the battle.
5. What do you think is the perfect song for the Survivors’ Lap? The luminaria Ceremony of Hope? Wake up the house by the pfeiffers
6. If you could travel to another Relay anywhere in the country, where would you go and why? L.A. because it’s bigger and the relay is probably bigger and more people to meet. I’ve always wanted to take a vacation there.
7. What is your favorite web site (other than RelayForLife.org)? My Space so I can talk with my friends
