Why I'm doing this

I decided to enter the Relay for Life this year because for a long time I have not talked very much about having had cancer 11 years ago, and this was one way for me try to open the dialogue.  Too often cancer is a very silent disease.  People who have it may not know, and when they do, they and/or their loved ones often find themselves unable to talk about it.  I will be walking in celebration of being cancer free for all this time, and in memory of Jan Reed, the former director of my children's preschool, who suffered from a painful, undiagnosed breast cancer for over a year before finally being recognized at an incurable stage.  I am also walking in the memory of my grandfather, Sam Roybal, who died last year of recurrent, metastatic stomach cancer just days after telling me that he was fine and I did not need to come and visit.  I could list more friends, family members, and even patients that I have cared for who have been affected by cancer, unfortunately all of us can.  I

My staff partner can not get it on time and I thought what better place to go than here...if its out there I'm sure someone on this site can find it. PLEASE HELP!! Laughing

WHY?

why do we have this horrible disease in our lives? Soon with all of our help this disease will no longer exist because we will have found a cure. share your story here is mine. i lost my grandmother to cancer and it was a really hard time and right after i had just gotten over her death I found out that my other grandma's boyfriend had cancer in his throat. He had surgery and it went away but about a 2 weeks later it came back and he still has cancer. I hope he will live because we found a cure. So no one else will lose a loved one. So share your story!!

T-Shirt Ideas

Hi everyone!

New team and new to forum....looking for a clever slogan for Relay t-shirts! Our theme is Occupation related...."Working Toward a Cure". There are 22 of us on our Relay team and we can not come up with any good clever ideas.  There are already relay teams of "Farmers", "Steel Workers", "Doctors", "Nurses", etc.  So anything common has been pretty much taken.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  We need an occupation that is for men and women and then a catchy slogan to print on t-shirts.

Buttons of Hope/ Fundraiser Idea

I came across this website when I was looking for fundraising ideas. www.buttonsofhope.com

If you take a look at the site, it's really nice! You can create a photo button of the person/people you "Relay" for. The man in charge is really great and easy to work with! I got my buttons in the mail today and they are absolutely perfect, exactly what I was looking for! You could actually do it as a fundraiser for any cause. Our "Relay" team decided to give it a try so we'll see how it goes! You can set the price for the button and the amount donated back. It doesn't cost anything to set up, just a few minutes of your time!

Relay For Life of Second Life launches with a BANG!

I hope by now, many of you have had a chance to learn about the Relay For Life event taking place in one of the world's largest virtual communities, Second Life.  Fayandria Foley, the event chair, blogs here from time to time and brags (rightfully so!) on her awesome group of international volunteers who not only "get" Relay but are blowing their event out of the water!

The kick off took place about a month ago, the official launch of the season was held Saturday and attended by about 200 people, and official fundraising began Sunday 3/16.  At last count, team recruitment was at 84 teams (up from 43 last year) and fundraising totals were at a little over $14,300 at 12pm PST today.  I don't know about you, but I'd be thrilled to raise $14k for my local event - IN THREE DAYS!

I can not be more proud to work with such an amazing group of volunteers who not only welcomed Relay into their community.  They "get it" and have made it their own!  This is such a great example of how Relay is truly universal, no matter what the community.  As Fay would put it "Go Relay!"

This is the REASON

I belive God has been telling me to do something for others and not just me. I can't get out of my head a walk for Cancer. I have a new friend who had cancer. Ever since then, I've been feeling compelled to do something about this. I belive cancer can be beatable someday in the future. And the only way to do maje it happen is to do something about it.

Magic Happens

Hi Everyone!!

I am part of a student-run summer camp program for children who have or had a parent with cancer, where campers build self-esteem and gain support from peers facing similar challenges. This wonderful opportunity gives children a chance to have a worry free fun filled week of camp and is absolutely free. Any child between the ages of 6-13 may apply. Camp will be from August 18-22 this year and I really encourage everyone to apply.

Thanks!!
