Woman's Day Article

The April 15, 2008 issue of Woman's Day has a wonderful article about "Your Anti-Cancer Action Plan".  It captures the essence of the FIGHT BACK message and has some great information.

The article talks about how lung and breast cancer rates are stabilizing, but that there seems to be a rise in skin, thyroid and kidney cancers, possibly due to obesity.  The article goes on to explain by making some lifestyle changes we can have a major impact on our chances of developing cancer.

One of the parts of the article that I particularly liked was the "Eat to Beat Cancer" segment.  It highlights foods that we can eat as part of our regular diet to help protect against a variety of cancers.

The article also highlights some individuals who have battled cancer and actions that they have taken.  It ends with the screening tests that save lives.  There is even a blurb about ACS CAN and how cancer affects the uninsured and underinsured.

In whole it was one of the best articles that I have seen lately about cancer.  I loved how it used the FIGHT BACK messaging.

NEED HELP!!

I live a small town in Texas of maybe 1200 people. Our Relay is one of the oldest Relay's around. But through the years people have lost interest. I have been involved in Relay for 10 plus years. This is my second year to be event chair. It seems like since I took chair people have been dropping like flies. The community doesn't have a problem with me or anything. They just know with me and my family we will get it done. People are wanting us to stop having Relay because of the low participation. I refuse to let it stop. What I am needing is ideas of getting them involved. If you are from a small town and know of ways please let me know. My attitude is that Relay started with one person and if need be I will carry on our relay with just my family. But I would really like to have the town to be involved as well. Please send help.

Our Relay is May 2nd and I only have 2 teams. I'm getting ready to switch to panic mode.

Thanks

Debbie Bills

I am a registered nurse living in West Branch. I have practiced as a chemotherapy nurse, a home care nurse, and in the hospital on surgical, medical, and critical care units. In my working role, I have been directly involved in literally hundreds of families fighting cancer. Some of these families have been my neighbors, relatives, my childrens' friends, and members of my congregation. As I cared for them, I found a deep desire to DO SOMETHING to fight back against this disease that devastates so many of those I love. I decided to become active In Relay for Life as a vehicle for action. My favorite time of Relay is the luminary ceremony when we walk the track and I can read the names of all those people I have helped to care for in my community. As I walk, I silently promise each of them, one more time, that their fight is not over, nor is it in vain because I will continue that fight for them.

Introducing myself

Hello Everyone,

My name is Stephanie.  I would like to introduce myself and look forward to meeting new people.  I am 32 years old.  I am a proud mother whom is graduating college on May 10th, of 2008 with an Associates degree in Medical Assisting.  I lost my two best friends to cancer, my mother and grandfather.  I have been a supportor for the American Cancer Society because I strongly believe in the work they do.  I am in an Oral communications class right now and I am giving a Informative/Persuasive Speech on ACS.  I chose ACS because I want others to be aware of all they do and hope to convince them to give their support.  Well, I don't want to bore you anymore with details of my life.  If you want to ask me anything, please do I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know new people.

Where Does The Money Go?

I am new to the relay this year, and decided to jump in feet first and be a team captain.  So far, so good.  I had my first team meeting this week (good turn out, lots of enthusiasm). Embarassed Here's my question though...I know the money goes to research, education, advocacy, and patient services, but one of my team members had a potential donor ask if the money raised by our team is kept local, within the county, state or nation wide?  I appreciate any info you can pass along.

Thanks!Smile
