Our Home Interiors Team for ACS Relay for Life 2008 is made up of members throughout Washington state and beyond! Some are Home Interior consultants, some are friends, some are relatives, some are over 60, some are under 10, some are in-between, some are supporting a cancer survivor, some are honoring a cancer patient who has passed. The core of our team is that we have all joined together to find ways to beat cancer and to keep it from from inflicting pain on so many friends and family members.
My husband, Woody, has had an aggressive bladder tumor removed 18 months ago. He undergoes testing every 3 months to make sure it hasn't returned. His mother passed from cancer in 1985. My uncle has lung cancer and has beaten the odds for years because of ongoing research coming up with new treatments. Several more of our family members have cancer now, and some have passed because of this disease.
I am not a doctor or nurse or researcher. But...I am a dedicated fund raiser, helping support those who are fighting to make a difference. Please join me and our Home Interiors Team this spring in striving to end cancer in our lifetime! Nancy nancy_covey@yahoo.com

I am looking to collect simple recognition ideas that could be used to recognize committee members, team captains or participants at Relay meetings. Some things I have already thought of are plaques, certificates and framed photos with messages from friends on the back...Does anyone have any other creative suggestions?

Help! Our committee is a little divided over this issue. We have a local brewery who may become a corporate sponsor. We don't want to promote alcohol, but we don't want to turn down money. I say we take their money, but let them know their logo won't get put on the t-shirts or signs. Is this correct? What's the best way to handle this?

Hello everyone! I know it has been quite some time since I've blogged, but as the Relay season gets underway here in the High Plains you'll hear more from me. However, today, I'm saddened. One of our Heroes of Hope, Tori, has left us Monday morning. She lost her four year battle with Leukemia. Her courage and strength far surpass my own. I often wonder, could I have been as strong as Tori till the end?
I pray I never have to find out. I pray the same for each of you and your loved ones. The loss of Tori brings sadness because she is no longer with us, but at the same time joy, because she is no longer in pain. I can guarantee that she's doing multiple back flips without interruption. And landing each one perfectly!
She reminds me of why I'm here. Why I FIGHT BACK! May you CELEBRATE your loved ones, REMEMBER all of the wonderful moments you've shared, and FIGHT BACK against anyone or ANYTHING that tries to take those moments from you.

Hi,
I'm new to the Relay for Life and I signed up for a location on 6/6. As it turns out my sister-in-law - who is my survivor will be in Florida at that time. I did find another location but how do I get everything switched over to that location? I tried contacting ACS but so far no help. Does anyone know who to delete a team so I can reregister for a different location? I don't care about having to pay again.
Please help

Hi everyone!
Upstate New York is looking for clever slogans for college t-shirts! Our theme is "Wanna Spend the Night". Last year our jokes included:
I put out ... my cigarette today.
I touch myself ... for testicular cancer.
Wanna Spend the Night? Relay For Life
If you have any pictures, slogans, ideas, ANYTHING just drop me an email, achauvot@hotmail.com
Thanks!

My father has just been diagnosed with Malignant Mesothelioma. I traveled down to Port Aransas where he lives to take him to his first visit with an oncologist which didn't turn out to be a very optimistic visit. We were told surgery was not an option, radiation was not an option, chemo was all there was and given the names of the drugs that he would recommend and the doctor wasn't sure if they would do any good.
I asked the doctor about him going to MD Anderson and he thought it would be a good idea, at least for them to look over his case and see what they think, they may tell him the same thing, if that's the case then he can issue the chemo there in Corpus (that's where he, the doctor was located). I asked the oncologist about the clinical trials that I read about at MD Anderson and he said that it wouldn't be a bad idea to check into those as well. My father is very anxious about starting treatment so he would prefer to do it there locally. I would personally prefer him to get treatment at MD Anderson.

HELP! I have signed up to be a team captain. I could use some help with some fundraising ideas. Does anyone know where I can get applications for the relay to put at my employeers. I would also like to know where I can get a brochure or something like it to put around a couple of coffee cans for coin donations?? Thank you!

Woo woo! Relay For Life season is starting. This is like Wedding Crashers, except it's Relay For Life Planners. Ha. I'm not going to school this semester, but staying in Plattsburgh to work and organize RFL. I'm not an ACS rep, so I'm taking a weird position of active member/shadow, in order to respect the person who steps in as chair. Any advice, to anyone who may read this, would be appreciated.

We have been struggling with using glow sticks and the waste they create. We would like to use Battery Operated Candles instead. They create a more realistic flicker in the bag and create far less waste.
We've found a site online called Global Sources that works with a variety of Chinese manufacturers. You put out a message stating what you are looking for and the manufacturers get back to you with a quote. We went through this process and found one manufacturer who can sell them to us for a very reasonable price (for a very large number at one time). We figure we could divide them out over a few different Relays.
The Pro's:
- Cost is only slightly higher than glow sticks (including the cost of shipping).
- This particular kind last up to 36 hours
- Replacement batteries are very cheap.
- No throwing away piles of useless glow sticks that just go to the dump.
- Savings over time.
- More attractive/realistic than Glow Sticks

I have participated in Relay for the past 6 years. I began as just a team captain and last year I moved up and joined the committee! I moved out of our home area last summer and I am looking forward to getting involved in my new local Relay For Life.
Since moving I have started selling candles. I love doing fundraisers and offer these candles in a fundraiser. If you are interested please contact me so that I can get you more information. My email is: kacook07@gmail.com or my phone number is 979-412-2941. You can also request more information about the candles from my web page: www.kacook.scent-team.com.
I wish you, your team and Relay GREAT success this year!
