I relay for my dad!

Why do I relay? I relay for my dad who passed away March 6, 2003, from non-smokers lung cancer.  Here is how we found out how my dad having cancer.

Beginning of August, 2002, when my family went to Ohio for one of my friends wedding. My dad was having his usual sinus problems. We came home from the Ohio, and my mom & dad went to a b&b on Aug. 7, for my dad's birthday (Aug. 8). By the night of Aug. 7, my dad had trouble breathing, and went to the emergency room. Tests were done, nothing was found, so the diagnosis was congestive heart failure. My dad came home from the hospital only to return a few days later. More tests were done, and still nothing. This time the diagnosis was congestive heart failure with pnumonia.  My dad came home, only to end up in the hospital again a few days later. More tests were done. This time fluid was found on the lung, and 2 liters were drained & tested. The diagnosis was stage 4 non-smoker lung cancer. Doctors & specialist looked at the previous tests, and no one could understand why the cancer never showed up until it did. My dad was given 3-4 months to live, no radiation or surgery, possible chemo. My dad said no to the chemo, and lived 6 1/2 months.

Ideas for fundraiser flyers needed

My team is doing a few fundraisers. I need to design flyers for them to help raise awareness of these funraisers.

The things we will be doing is creating a team cookbook and then selling them for approximately $5.

Then my 3 oldest children will be going around our neighborhood this spring offering to do yard work in exchange for a small donation.

My youngest 2 daughters thought of holding a pop can/bottle drive.

Finally all 4 of my children will be washing dogs every saturday for a month in exchange for a small donation as well.

Of course all of the proceeds will go towards benefitting the Relay for Life.

I need a few catchy ideas for the flyers though. If you have any catchy ideas for the flyers please let me know. You can also reach me by emailing me directly at mjcovey@charter.net

Auction Name?

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions about what kind of items and who to contact for our silent auction.

Last night we got approval to have the auction at one of the biggest and most popular bars in the city, its all very exciting.

We need to get to work on posters, but I need a name for the event. Something other than "Relay For Life Silent Auction"

We are having up to 5 or more bands performing throughout the event, we dont have a specific lineup yet, we are still waiting on a couple of confirmations, but I want to get word out early.

Anybody have any clever suggestions for a name?

Healthy New Year

As always, my resolutions include "lose weight", "be healthier", "exercise more".  The difference this year is that I feel like each one  of those is achievable.

In the past, I made these resolutions because I felt like I had to.  Being overweight, I felt like if I didn't make the resolution, anyone that knew me wouldn't respect my committment to those things.

This year, I make those resolutions but have a specific plan for each.  I know how much weight I want to remove from my body this  year.  I know what "exercise more" looks like and I know what healthy looks like.

So here it is:

Lose at least 30% of my current body weight
Exercise 5-6 days a week and walk Relay for Life
Be cancer free at all six appointments scheduled for 2008

Here's to a cancer free 2008 for me.

The Flocking Flamingos

I've read about a few teams doing the yard flamingo fundraisers. I have my flamingos but was wondering how your teams went about collecting donations. Did you go back after 24 hours and knock on their door? Did you leave an envelope, etc?

 Thanks for your help

Realy Idol?

Have you ever done Relay Idol?  How did you get started?  We are interested in having it as a fundraiser for our event.  We would appreciate any tips you can give us

Campsite Decorating Ideas Needed

Our theme this year is "I Hope You Dance" combined with the more general "Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back."  Does anyone have any campsite decorating ideas?
